Throwback to Linguists by the Sea Autumn 2024

"It was a joy to spend a day with a bunch of linguists chatting specialisms, experience, language combinations, organisational tips and tricks and everything in between and beyond. I'm grateful for a space that was so safe, encouraging, and uplifting, a space that welcomed and celebrated honesty and vulnerability and reminded us of the importance of connection as freelancers. Thank you for bringing us all together and making freelance life feel a little less scary and a lot less lonely." - Holly France "It was, as ever, great to chat to fellow language professionals about our work and how we can be better at it. My favourite discussion was probably the one focusing on source language maintenance. It can be tricky to find the time to do extra language practice away from business, so it was especially helpful to hear how other people go about it. I came away with some excellent new ideas to keep language maintenance interesting and consistent, which I'll be trying to implement in the coming months." - Chris Drew

Throwback to Linguists in the Lakes Winter 2024

“[I] met some lovely fellow translators, got inspired to continue working on my business and had a great laugh!” – Louise Goddard “We spent the day chatting, sharing tips and planning for our businesses, covering a range of topics from marketing and social media presence to stress and mental health, followed by a scenic walk along Morcambe Bay and a delicious Greek dinner. As ever, it was great to put faces to names and I came home feeling inspired and invigorated.” – Laura Jones “[I] had the best couple of days in the Lake District with some other translators at the translators’ retreat. Day one was spent networking and discussing business-related topics, such as work/life balance, business branding and finding clients. Day two was a more adventurous affair with canoeing in the morning and high ropes in the afternoon. All set against the beautiful backdrop of Coniston Water – very good for the mind, body and soul!” – Lottie Lodge “[I] really enjoyed the Business Retreat for Translators Linguists in the Lakes on Friday! Set in the beautiful surroundings of Coniston Water, it was a chance to unwind in the company of fellow translators and discuss our approaches to work/life balance and mental health, business branding and social media, and finding and working with clients. The day was topped off with a lovely evening meal and the chance to socialise!” – Sarah Cutts

Throwback to Linguists in the Lakes Summer 2023

"Much fun was had at the inaugural Linguists in the Lakes business retreat. [...] Great to catch up with/meet new colleagues and take time out to work on rather than in the business: now just need to action my notes..." - Hayley Wood "Eighteen language professionals - from fledgling to established - gathered at Coniston Water to discuss business, marketing and financial matters, sharing their knowledge and experience, helping each other solve problems, and setting goals for the future. It was a fantastic day, with plenty of food for thought, and I'm excited to put my plans into action after a much-needed holiday next week." - Laura Jones "I got there and spent a day with loads of amazing colleagues, all sharing advice and support about how they run their businesses. Topping it all off with some lakeside activities and a pub meal next to Morecambe Bay. I got to meet new friends, old friends, and some friends who I've known since the beginning of my career. [...]" - Kelsey Frick "[...] I had the pleasure of attending the Linguists in the Lakes Business Retreat for Translators and learnt a whole lot about freelancing, as well as the joy of meeting a wonderful group of fellow freelancers! Starting the day with the 'serious' business chat, (as serious as this lot ever get!) talking business goals, finance and marketing, and ending with a dip in the lake and a lovely meal together was just the perfect combination. [...] I left feeling very inspired to build my little business and very grateful for my new-found translator friends." - Louise Goddard "On Day 1 of being a freelance translator I had the incredible opportunity to attend the first ever Business Retreat for Translators in the Lake District where I got to meet a lovely group of fellow freelance translators with so much experience and knowledge to share with me! I learnt a lot about freelancing and the industry and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to learn and network so early in my career." - Cerys Hodson "In a stunning Lake District setting, it was a productive and enjoyable day and a great opportunity to share ideas and experiences with like-minded people in my field." - Katherine Jenzik "I embarked on an adventure when I signed up for the Linguists in the Lakes translators' retreat. To say it exceeded my expectations would be an understatement! A full day of strategic planning, exchanging insights, and igniting creativity with fellow freelance translators amidst the breathtaking backdrop of Coniston Water was exactly what my business-sapped brain needed after dealing with numerous family matters. Our group of 18 translators cultivated an atmosphere that seamlessly blended relaxation with nurturing, making it an authentic retreat experience. The day concluded with some taking to the water (cue my guilty head-hanging for not packing my water gear) and a delicious meal at a local pub, where the enriching discussions persisted. I emerge from this retreat rejuvenated, armed with a strategic plan, and a renewed self-belief." - Lucie Gallen "It was fantastic to spend a day discussing all things freelance translation with everyone there - I've come away with plenty of ideas to continue developing my business over the coming months." - Christopher Drew
